Unlike "Little Earthquakes," which resounded with me deeply and immediately, "Scarlet's Walk" took a while to make an impression. I bought it on disc at a used book store because it was around four dollars and it was there and I think I was going through a Tori Amos phase, so I assumed I'd give it the same treatment that I gave "Earthquakes." But this was Amos' seventh album, while "Earthquakes" was her first, and their differences somehow alienated me to the vibes on "Scarlet's Walk." Which happen to be road-trip, middle of summer, seashore, ripped-up American flag, Sylvia Plath vibes of the very best kind.
But time went on and I found that "Strange" and "Scarlet's Walk" are among my favorite Tori Amos songs, so the rest of the album soon followed. It's tough to pull off an eighteen track concept album, and Amos does it beautifully with "Scarlet's Walk." A truly sophisticated, artistic record.
